The software question on a used SCIEX instrument

Hardware gets inspected. The software licence, which decides whether the instrument can be run at all, usually does not get priced until after the money has moved.

What is actually happening

SCIEX has been moving its mass spectrometry line from Analyst software to SCIEX OS for several years, and states plainly that this transition will result in the end-of-support for Analyst. That much is published.

What is not published, at least on the public support pages, is a specific retirement date, or the conditions under which an existing owner moves to SCIEX OS without paying. Both circulate second-hand in listings and sales conversations. Neither should be taken from a dealer, including us.

The concrete, checkable constraint is the operating system. Analyst is not supported on Windows 11 or on future operating systems. SCIEX OS 4.0 is compatible with Windows 11 LTSC 2024. A lab with a hardware refresh cycle will meet that wall before it meets any retirement date.

We have deliberately not printed a retirement date or an upgrade price here. Figures for both are in circulation and we could not confirm either against a SCIEX source. Ask SCIEX directly and get the answer in writing, then price it into the deal.

Why it lands hardest on a used purchase

A new instrument arrives with its software entitlement settled by the purchase. A used one does not. The licence sits with the previous owner, and whether it comes with the hardware is a question about that specific unit and that specific agreement.

The failure mode is predictable. A buyer compares two triple quads on hardware and price, picks the cheaper one, and then discovers the licence does not come with it and the paid path is a five-figure conversation with the manufacturer. The saving is gone, and it was never in the listing.

There is a second version of the same trap on the front end. Mixing LC brands with a SCIEX mass spectrometer is only clean where a real driver exists. Where it does not, control drops back to contact closure, which means gradients and autosampler methods live outside the acquisition software. That is a workflow decision, not a cable.
