A high-end mass spectrometer does not move like a piece of furniture. Who performs the move can decide whether the instrument stays eligible for manufacturer service, and the receiving lab has to be able to accept it.
Manufacturer service terms commonly reserve relocation and reinstallation of high-end mass spectrometers to the manufacturer or an authorised agent. Where that condition applies, a move performed by anyone else can invalidate an existing service contract, which is a far larger loss than the cost of the move.
This is visible in public procurement. Buyers subject to competitive tendering have justified sole-sourcing Orbitrap relocations to Thermo on the grounds that another vendor performing the move would void and invalidate the existing service contract. That is a reasonable signal about how the terms are read in practice.
None of this makes a used purchase a bad idea. It makes the move a question to settle in writing, with the manufacturer, before the instrument is bought rather than after it is on a truck.
Confirm the terms for your own instrument and contract. Policies differ by manufacturer, by product line and by contract, and a guide on a dealer site is not a substitute for the agreement you signed.
Transit vibration can shift ion optics with no visible damage at all. The instrument arrives looking exactly as it left, and performs differently. That is why a move ends in re-verification rather than in switching the system on.
On an Orbitrap the ion source is removed and packed separately. The practical consequence is that a move has a sequence, a set of parts that travel apart from the instrument, and a test at the end that produces a document.
That document is the thing worth insisting on. A relocated instrument with a verification run at the destination is a known quantity. One without is a description.
Manufacturers publish preinstallation requirements. Reading them before buying is the cheapest step in the whole process, and the one most often skipped.
